Since April 24, 6 students of industrial design including me have given shape to Het Beun Collectief, a collective workshop for the members to create together, in order to prototype more effectively.
Het Beun Collectief provides shared storage and access to power tools for working with wood, metal, plastic, electronics, and textiles. The diverse interests of its six members combined transform the space into a dynamic workshop where a broad variety of projects take shape, each project further pushing our knowledge, further innovating both the members and the work to higher levels.

After months of searching, two members found a space within a studio at Piet Hein Eek. The aim was to create a workspace for what should become a collective of creative and driven Industrial Design students who wanted to put just that bit extra in their prototypes.

As the space was an independent project of students only, the project had to be fitted next to the regular curriculum. Within the first months, this meant significant parts of the workshop's development was realized during evening hours, the only time available after lectures and project.

With the academic year reaching its end, all members were actively working on final reports, projects, and other educational deadlines. Nonetheless, a rudimentary workshop was set up within six weeks, just in time to start utilizing the space for final academic prototypes.

After returning from the summer holidays, we continued improving the project space. This included placing proper workbenches, broadening our variety of tools for CNC machining and embroidery, and creating dedicated spaces for storage, production and studying.

Simultaneously, the collective worked towards Dutch Design Week 2024. The workshop had become not only a location, but also a collective of various bachelor students, their networks, and their capabilities. This dynamic environment became an incubator for collective projects, which we wanted to exhibit during DDW underneath the name "Het Beun Collectief".

To portray the collective capabilities of Het Beun Collectief, we started the Cellalescence project. Elaborating on the idea of a fellow member of the workshop, we created an interactive cloud chandelier. Cellalescence was formed through a more extensive process to include our broad variety of techniques, aiming to shape a unique, complex and detailed artwork of portraying members.

The Cellalescence project became one of the most creative educative opportunities for the collective, as it pushed to create quality within a short timespan. For myself, personal interest in rapid prototyping lead to my role of creating the chandelier's individual modules, which became a fast process of CAD-modeling, printing, testing, and re-iteration. Additionally, I designed graphics and poster for other member's projects to ensure the workshop effectively told the story of its inhabitants.

During DDW24, Cellalescence succeeded in portraying the collaborative creative mind within the collective, ending as the key topic for visitors. With visual representations of all members, small projects and various artifacts, the workshop of Het Beun Collectief formed a creative experience, becoming a part in the puzzle of the creative atmosphere at Piet Hein Eek.

Beyond Cellalescence, Het Beun Collectief also contributed to other projects within the complex and during DDW. Notably, our embroidery machine contributed to the DutchDesignAwards of that year, with a member embroiding the text as a live demo. Additionally, we successfully helped bring the Piet Hein Eek Dakbar back into operation by, among other things, designing and 3D printing custom drafting grips.

After the workshop became a part of the creative atmosphere, we continued to use it to further develop individual projects alongside our educational tracks. Amongst diverse pieces of furniture, these included metal casting, experimental circuitry, diverse implications of embroidery, and personally, Compct.
Through the past year, the workshop has become an influential part to each individual's process of developing our designer identity. We continue to both support and challenge each other with new projects, production methods and techniques as on any given day, at least two of our six members can be found working in the shop. We expect this to remain unchanged in the foreseeable future, as we enthusiastically aim to showcase this process, it's results, and our collective capabilities again during DDW25.
Through Het Beun Collectief, I had the honor to contribute to the creation of a space that is both educationally and creatively innovative. This experience has not only enhanced my personal growth but has also strengthened both my entrepreneurial and technical skills, shaping a memory which will remain influential for me over time.
Beyond the collective, the workshop has become an essential space for accelerating my own projects. With its specialized environment and diverse toolset, it enables me to refine my prototyping processes, design and create furniture, and experiment with domotics. Simultaneously, it's creative environment regularly leads to exchange of insights with others, further pushing the boundaries of my work.
