Lumesphere

An interactive light orb aimed to explore the shared experience and potential social interactions between household members.

Through a proposing and speculative approach an artifact was created for the purpose of exploring social interaction & collaboration. The result became an interactive light orb which could be personalized by an individual's interaction, to be reflected upon by others. This aimed to improve the shared experience through increasing awareness of the environment.

It can be considered as a wallflower design. Blending in with the environment, needing attention to be activated.

Educational Group Project

Lumesphere originated out of an educational project for my bachelor Industrial design. Hosted within the New Futures Squad of the TU/e’s Industrial Design Department, our project had a focus on future ways of living within a household, 25 years from now. Together with David Frenkel, Emma de Haas & William Yen, I worked on exploring potential differences within social interactions and collaborations between household members. The goal was To increase the awareness of the interactions of other inhabitants, and to stimulate conversation regarding these interactions.

Project Contributions

  1. Problem Statement. Adapted the design sprint methodology to kickstart the group towards a goal and problem statement.
  2. Exploration. Motivated visual low-fidelity prototyping to accelerate conceptualization and communication
  3. Rapid Prototyping. Created a low-fidelity Adruino UI to modify the visual appearance of the Lumesphere.
  4. User testing. Hosted interviews and questionnaires to test specific interactions between the artifact and potential users.
  5. Presentation. Production of two short films to present the project.

Project Influences

  • Interaction Behaviour. I was highly involved in the testing of earlier concepts through questionnaires and user tests, in order to support the creation of higher fidelity prototypes. Due to this high involvement I simultaneously became more involved in how interactions with the Lumesphere should revolve.
  • Visual Presentation. To present the concept, I was responsible for creating a visual presentation video. Instead of following the conventional track, I chose to deviate and create both an interview documentary and a speculative short film instead.

For Lumesphere, my key contributions focused on improving team efficiency and effectuation, particularly through prototyping, insightful user testing and visual communication. These efforts led to effective interaction design iterations and successful project documentation & presentation.

Beyond the project itself, working alongside students experienced within CAD and coding pushed me to refine my own skills. Lumesphere inspired me to integrate Exploratory Sketching into my Bachelor curriculum and further develop my CAD capabilities for high-fidelity prototyping.

As Lumesphere was an educational product, it was discontinued after the project's completion and disassembled to repurpose its components.
